The short answer
Register with the Council, register the firm, and build a small portfolio of built work before taking on larger liability.
Begin with registration and a properly constituted firm — proprietorship, partnership or LLP — plus professional indemnity if you can obtain it. Set up a drawing and documentation standard early; it determines how much supervision your work needs.
Most practices grow from a few completed projects and referrals. Publishing built work, entering awards and documenting process are the cheapest ways to build credibility with new clients.
