The short answer

Designs outdoor space — grading, planting, paving, water and lighting — as a functioning system rather than decoration.

Landscape architects work on drainage and levels, planting palettes suited to the climate, paving and hardscape, water features, irrigation and exterior lighting. On larger sites they also handle circulation and parking.

Involving them early prevents the usual outcome where levels are set for the building and the garden has to absorb every drainage problem.
