What does a quantity surveyor do?

The short answer

Measures quantities from drawings, prepares the BOQ, compares contractor rates and tracks variations and payments.

A quantity surveyor turns drawings into measurable quantities — concrete, steel, masonry, finishes — and prices them into a bill of quantities. That BOQ becomes the common basis for comparing contractor quotes.

During construction they track variations and certify interim payments. On projects where the budget is tight, an independent QS is often cheaper than the overruns it prevents.
